Feeling Lost? Ask Yourself One Simple Question
Life is made of ups and downs. There are times when you feel yourself bursting in joy, full of projects and creativity, and some other times when you don’t know what you want anymore.
Figuring out life is difficult. Children get asked at a very young age what they want to become, without even fully knowing who they are. At school, there are mathematics courses, history courses, but no life courses.
Answers, therefore, have to be found in experiences and books.
Lost in the vastness of possibilities
Sometimes, it feels like time is running, and with it comes life.
It happened to me a few months ago. I was at the beginning of a transitional year, between photography school and fulltime work as a freelance writer. I got offered a job opportunity, besides school, which I accepted. I gave it all my spare time, with the promise to get a full-time and well-paid job at the end of the year.
Nice opportunity, isn’t it?
This job took away all my projects. All my dreams to be a writer.
I couldn’t stand putting myself in a box in my early twenties. Moreover, I need freedom, and can’t bear spending all my days sitting behind the same desk.
One problem was solved. But here came another one.
I felt relieved. But I now had another problem: what was I going to do now?
All the perspectives were open. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life anymore. I felt lost.
What do I want now?
This is the very question to ask yourself whenever you feel lost.
What do you want now?
Take a sheet of paper and a pen, write this question as a title, and be truly and brutally honest with yourself. Write down all your dreams, realistic or not. Describe the person you want to become. The projects you want to accomplish. Where you want to be 4 months from now.
This question is honestly the key. It allows you to realign with yourself. With who you truly are. It is an opportunity to get back on your path. Your path.
Set an action plan!
At some point, you should feel a spark of excitement. It’s your deep self expressing its satisfaction.
Now that you know what you want, the next step is figuring out a way to get there.
List down all the obstacles and the things you need to overcome to accomplish your project. Then, find a solution to all of them. Some solutions might take time to appear. It’s okay.
Work toward your goal every day
Even if it’s 5 minutes. You need to take tiny (or bigger) steps every single day. It’s the best way to get closer and closer to your dreams.
Whenever things get difficult (and they will), don’t quit. Your dreams, your projects, the person you want to become… All of it is worth the work.
Every big project started with a small beginning.
